UConn’s Education Abroad in Cape Town is designed to facilitate greater understanding of South Africa’s troubled past while providing opportunities to witness its vibrant hope for the future. While living, learning and working in one of most beautiful settings in the world students: participate in three-day a week internships; take courses to help contextualize their experiences; expand their horizons; and develop a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a global citizen.
2015 Co-educators
WELCOME TO OUR BLOG
As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.
As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.
In peace, with hope,

Bernie's excited for her first trip abroad
Hi everybody, my name is Bernadette McMahon, but everyone calls me Bernie or one of the various other nicknames I have. I am an Allied Health Sciences major with a concentration in Health Promotion. I am a junior in this program. I decided to study aboard in Cape Town for many different reasons. One of the reasons is because of what I want my future career to be. I want to become an international nurse that focuses mainly on developing areas, but also be a public health professional that assists in making the community better but at the same time being able to provide hands on care. In Cape Town, having the ability to participate in internships will be beneficial to me because it will be applicable to my real life and what I want to do in the future. The other reason I chose to study abroad in Cape Town is because of all the wonderful experiences I heard about people having in Cape Town. I am so very excited about being selected to participate in this program. My dream is to travel out of the country and see as much as the world as possible while being able to help others at the same time. Since I have not been out of the country yet, I am excited that South Africa is the first place I will travel too! I am very excited to start this program in January and meet so many new people and learn new information.
