2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Emily E's belief in the power of words

Ever since I found out about the program in my sophomore year at UConn, I started envisioning myself there. Then I started to believe in my heart that I would abroad in South Africa.  I have always believed in the power of words so when someone asked me where I thought I was studying abroad I said “Cape Town, South Africa.” I am so grateful I got into the program. Even though I declared that I was going, it still was overwhelmed with emotion when I received my acceptance letter.

Meet RA, Jessica Gates

Purple Post-It

When I first started at the School Of Social Work, we went to many, many, many informational seminars. Things like “Get involved in your student government…. Join this, join that”, students eagerly stated. The opportunities seemed endless. Someone then mentioned, “we have a travel abroad program.” My interest was piqued. The student rattled off a few places that previous students had gone, Germany, Puerto Rico, and South Africa. There was a physiological reaction. My pupils expanded and my heart palpitations picked up, someone had said South Africa. Being that first year students could not apply, I would have to wait until the second year of the program to apply for an abroad program. In the second semester, someone put a sign up about an informational session about traveling abroad. I went to the session and was fascinated by the pictures and her tales of travel. Her name was Erin, and she was a RA. From that moment on, I inquired to my field advisor, and a teacher, while expressing interest in the potential opportunity.

I had always been into positive affirmations, and speaking things you want into existence. The whole “put it out in the universe” was a practice I was trying to incorporate into my life. So, I got out some post-it’s, and wrote some things I wanted to come into fruition. On a purple post-it on the upper right corner of my full length mirror, laid the phrase “I’M GOING TO SOUTH AFRICA” in bold letters. It became a morning mantra. That then turned into a reality.  While I’m very excited about the opportunity, I don’t think the reality has hit me yet.  Probably while boarding the plane from Detroit, the gravity of the situation and opportunity will come full circle.  I’m excited to share this journey with 17 other people who have not been there as well. I’m excited to see a part of the globe I’ve only seen on tv and read about in magazines. This is the motherland. It’s the apex of humanity and civilization. There is so much to learn, share and experience. Let the journey begin!!

Ashlyn hoping to build upon her previous Community Outreach experiences

I’m Ashlyn and I’m currently a junior Marketing major and Human Rights minor, as well as a running and reading enthusiast. Upon entering college I never envisioned myself studying abroad, but upon hearing about the Cape Town education abroad program I thought I’d look more into it. Nothing inspires me more to make a positive impact on world than my experiences on alternatives breaks here at UConn. I found out about this study abroad program through some girls I met on an alternative break. My hope is that my non-profit internship will motivate and impact me the same (or more) than my experiences with Community Outreach. I feel honored and humbled to be given a life in which studying abroad for 3 ½ months is even a possibility, much less a reality. I look forward to my many adventures abroad and the many new faces I’m to meet (which of course includes getting closer to all the other UConn students going to Cape Town).

Maria is eager to learn

My name is Maria Blois and I am a junior allied health major at UCONN in hope of attending PA school after I graduate.  I decided to study abroad in Cape Town because I am very eager to learn about a different lifestyle while learning about myself along the way.  It feels great being accepted into the program because it is the first step to the whole process that I will get to experience for a little over 3 months. Now that I am accepted I can start to meet and get to know the people I will be sharing this experience with.

Sam couldn't be more excited

I’m Samantha Brody, a Junior Human Development and Family Studies Major, with a Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor.  I decided to study abroad in Cape Town because I wanted a hands on experience working in a place that has such dense history regarding social inequality. I couldn't be more excited to experience all that Cape Town has to offer! I am so excited for this eye opening experience and to see a country that has been through so much to get to where it is today.

John's grateful UConn offers such an amazing program

My name is John Garcia, a senior currently working on my B.S. in Allied Health Sciences with a health sciences concentration. When looking for another study abroad program to go on, I realized that the UConn in Cape Town program was essentially the perfect program for me. Not only does this program offer great educational value to its participants but it also offers an unforgettable worldly experience. In my opinion, knowledge and education are one of the most powerful tools we have and it has always been a goal of mine to get the best education I can. I believe this program will help me do just that. I will be able to learn and broaden my outlook on human life, culture, and healthcare systems and I am grateful for UConn’s offer of such an amazing program

Molly counting down the days until departure

Hi I am Molly O'Hare and I am a sophomore biological science major with a chemistry minor. After my undergrad career I hope to attend dental school. I wanted to study abroad in Cape Town for many reasons including the internship program. Here in the states it is very hard to find work to do in the medical field for experience before getting your medical license. I was exited to be able to help people that have poor medical treatment and also be able to get experience and insight into my future. I also love outdoors and hiking and animals and I feel that South Africa offers me a unique experience that no other program can. I am so overwhelmed with excitement to be able to spend a semester in Cape Town and am counting down the days until our departure.
