2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Taylor doesn't miss a beat, even while awaiting surgery

Taylor P & Taylor L in bunks on Human Rights Weekend
This past weekend the group traveled to Goedgedacht for our Human Rights Weekend. While I was not sure what to expect, I really enjoyed the experience. It was so fascinating meeting South Africans, Zambians, Kenyans, etc. and hearing their individual stories.  These bright individuals were so outgoing and friendly! I slept in the “dormitory” and I loved talking to everyone as we went to bed and as we got ready for the day in the morning.

During the workshop, we talked about a lot of different human rights. I particularly liked talking about asylum seekers and refugees. In one of my past classes I did a presentation on Zaatari Refugee Camp. Despite doing a research project on refugees, I learned so much from talking about it during the workshops! I thought it was really valuable that I was able to build upon past knowledge.

While the weekend was enjoyable, I was excited to come home and begin my week. Yesterday, I attended a baby shower for one of the Speech Therapists at Eros. It was so sweet that I was included in this special occasion. Everyone at this school is so welcoming and friendly!

It was also sweet hearing everyone’s well wishes for my surgery. I’m sad that I will miss two days of work for the surgery, but I am anxious to get it over with and begin my healing process. I hope that I will soon be able to resume my normal activities, and be able to enjoy all that Cape Town offers!
