2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Molly has much to reflect on following the Human Rights Training Weekend

Just getting back from the Human Rights Weekend I have a lot to reflect on. It was really interesting finally learning about such issues and rights. I don’t remember ever having conversations such as this in school. It was crazy hearing the people in the exercises share their experiences in violation of human rights. It made me think, do we not have issues such as this in the US or do we ignore them? There are obviously human rights violations in the United States but I do not hear stories such as these and it could be due to my age, race, or the area I live in. It was just so touching to hear them sharing their stories with us. I was really shocked when one girl shared that she was attacked on her walk home from work yet she couldn’t tell her mom because she has no other transportation rather than walking on that road to work and can’t risk her mom not allowing her to do so. I really enjoyed just talking with the new people as soon as we got there we ended up making a circle in our room and talking about so many things that I would never converse with friends at home about including why people were there and just their situation and lives. Besides the hundreds of mosquitoes I really enjoyed this weekend. Knowing now that we only have 60 days left I want to make the most of every day I have left in this amazing place.
