2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Maria on different ways of learning

Maria, front and center

Earlier today we arrived back from our human rights weekend. It was such a unique experience and I learned so much while having fun. Going into this weekend I was a little nervous it would be a lot of sitting around and listening to people talk, but I was wrong. There was a lot of interaction with other peers and there was a lot of group action, which I enjoyed the most. My group was the country of Zambia and we had a very interesting dynamic. We were always joking and laughing but still managed to get the work we had to do done. Here is a picture of our group dressed up, as we had to present to the UN. I really enjoyed this part because it is not something I am used to doing; I am so used to studying all the time and not learning things through actually acting them out and saying them.

with Khayelitsha's  under 11 FireFighters Football Club

Bernie and I started our activist project last Thursday and I couldn’t be more excited that we chose to work with the Firefighters soccer team in Khayelitsha. Bongi is an amazing passionate person and it shows so much in how he carries himself and how he speaks to the children. Bernie and I both grew up playing soccer so getting to pass our knowledge down to these children is so rewarding and enjoyable at the same time. We are going to learn so much from this experience and I cannot wait until out tournaments start. Here is a picture of Bongi explaining to his team how they plan to set up their team on game days.
