2015 Co-educators

2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Sam is happy being where she is

Sam on Lion's Head

we got to hike lion's head on Thursday which was so much fun! it was hard at some points but i am glad we finally got to do it and get to the top. i am so excited to go back there with my sister and cousin when they visit!

going to kirstenbosch again on sunday was a lot of fun too! we had more time to explore the gardens and it is so beautiful there!

right now i am at a state where i think just thinking about where i am makes me so happy.  i went to the beach again on saturday as well and just being in the beauty of this place makes me feel so incredibly lucky.

the first week at christel house was great, i was lucky and able to actually do things! i went on home visits two days which i believe i talked about in my last blog post, but that was such an eye opening experience for me to judge people's poverty.

the second week has been great also! monday and tuesday i did a lot of filing which was boring but interesting, and today i took some kids to the dentist! the kids here get free dental and health care (part of their scholarship with the school). i have been connecting with so many of the kids though which is what i love and makes me love this place and make me confident that i want to work with kids in my career.  today all of the kids were so afraid of the dentist and all asked me to hold their hands while they were getting looked at. they all call me "miss" and they right away just ask me so many questions and want to hang out so much.

yesterday two second graders reminded me of valentines day and told me they were going to bring me something special, so i made pink rice krispy treats for all the kids at school. i love getting to know the kids so much.

this weekend we have a homestay and i don't really know what to expect but i am excited.

i love working at the school because kids come in all the time just to say hi! it is so sweet.

i am getting used to being in cape town and so happy and grateful for that.
