2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Dani's exciting week

Many exciting things have happened this past week, including experiences at my internship as well as our homestay in the Ocean View community.

The week started off at MaitlandCottage Hospital.  On Monday, Maria and I got the chance to watch three surgeries throughout the day in the “theatre.”  We watched two children get botox injections to relax their muscles and get plaster casts, and then later in the afternoon we got the chance to see a surgery in which a young girl got her leg broken in two places (ouch) in order to help straighten it out.  It was my first time watching surgeries take place, and although I wasn’t sure how I would react to seeing a surgery in real life, I found it quite interesting and luckily did not pass out!  Our internship continued on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We got to spend more time with the children, and found out that we will get to start our own art class for the patients soon, which I am very excited about.

On Thursday afternoon after class, we embarked on our weekend-long homestay in a township called Ocean View.  Emily E and I had the privilege of staying with the Daniels family, who have a 13 year old son and an 8 year old daughter.  The family was so welcoming, and we did so many fun things in the Ocean View community.  On Thursday night, we all went to a ballroom dancing class at the community center, which was fun even though most of us were not very talented.  On Friday, we spent the morning at a Kindergarten in the area, and later all had a cultural dinner at one of the host family’s homes.  On Saturday, my host family took Emily and myself to Cape Point, where their church congregation was having a picnic.  Finally, on Sunday, we had lunch with our host family before saying goodbye and heading back to Rondebosch.  Overall, it was a great fun-packed weekend.  Before spending time in Ocean View, I had no idea what to expect of life in a township, but I really had a wonderful time.  I will definitely be keeping in touch with my host family and hope to visit them again soon!
