2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Maria has found her routine

As we close in on a month here in Cape Town, I finally feel like I’ve found my routine. My internship at MaitlandCottage (pediatric orthopedic hospital) is going really well. Today I got to sit in on a two hour surgery where I was standing three feet away from the operating table. It was so awesome to see the surgeons at work knowing that the patient is on their way to a better life. The nurses and surgeons are always so willing to answer any questions I may have which provides for a really good learning environment.

On Thursdays we make our way up to UCT for classes with Vernon and Vincent. They are both so interesting with the amount of knowledge they have to share; I know I am going to learn so much about the history of this beautiful country from them. I am also starting to learn my way around campus a little better since it is a relatively large campus. With things being in full swing we have also had time to do leisurely activities. I absolutely love to hike so that was first on my list. I hiked Lion’s Head first which is shown in the picture. It was a really solid hike with a gorgeous view. The day after I hiked Chapman’s Peak which was absolutely gorgeous it was a totally different view of the other side of the mountain around the Hout Bay area. Homestays are this weekend which I am super anxious for because I don’t really know what to expect but it’s going to be such a unique experience.

Maria absolutely loves to hike
