2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Emily L's filled with excitement, joy and wonder

Emily L talking to Vernon on Chapman's Drive
Just 24 short hours ago, my feet touched African soil for the first time. While I still haven’t fully come to terms with the fact that I’m in a place I only dreamed of being, I can say that my time here so far has been nothing short of incredible. As we exited the Cape Town International Airport yesterday afternoon, I was instantly in awe. Right in front of me stood Table Mountain that I had been obsessively researching pictures of over the past few months. The mist around the mountaintop made it even more majestic looking than I thought it would.

The drive from the airport to our new home also left me wide-eyed. We passed more of the mountains, which seemed to stretch into the sky forever. The first township I saw really struck me. Seeing the metal and wooden shacks these people inhabit was incredibly humbling. We finally arrived at the house and, quite frankly, I freaked out! The house is stunning, and far beyond what I expected. Christina, my awesome roommate, and I were able to choose our bedrooms first which was awesome. We chose a room in the small house with a sweet view of the pool. Yeah, that’s right, a POOL!!!

I fell in love with my two RA’s, Ben and Jess, as soon as I met them. They were so warm and welcoming to us, I immediately felt at home with them around. The insight they offered us as a group and me individually already has helped me immensely. Marita and Vernon have already helped me so much in just these few short moments I’ve been here. They took us on a tour of Rondebosch, the area in Cape Town that we live in, this morning. Hearing Vernon explain certain locations and teaching us how to navigate his city inspired me to never stop exploring my new home for the next 14 weeks.

My heart is full of excitement, joy, and wonder at this moment. Who am I going to meet? What am I going to see? Will this experience change me forever? I can’t wait to go out on this adventure in search of these answers as well as so many more!

Until Next Time…

Emily
