2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Ashlyn may never be leaving

“The One Where Water Was Everywhere”

Two days ago the group landed in Cape Town, South Africa! I didn’t fly over with everyone else because I had been in Europe before. Being in Germany beforehand was super nice because now I don’t have to handle a big time difference. As I got into the car to leave the airport with one of our RAs, Ben, we saw Table Mountain for the first time. Table Mountain is this huge beautiful flat mountain connected to other mountains. The mountain can be seen from so many places in the city. Ben said he still remembers the first time he saw it, and that almost everyone remembers their first beautiful sighting of the mountain. I can definitely see myself remembering that moment forever. Even after that amazing moment I feel like it didn’t completely hit me that I was in South Africa for three and a half months. Seeing the house for the first time when everyone else got here was the first “oh my gosh, I’m in South Africa” moment.

I’ve already fallen in with Cape Town and have joked that there’s no way I’ve ever leaving. Mom, if you’re reading this, don’t worry I will come home at some point. Throughout the past semester everyone in the group took a pre-departure class together in order to get ready for this journey. Although I thought everyone was nice I didn’t know most people that well, but I have already gotten to know everyone so well. I can’t wait to get closer to everyone and make our own little family here. Tonight we all hung out together after dinner and then a few of us chilled in the kitchen talking. The upstairs toilet started spewing water and it ended up everywhere. Everyone was super helpful and everyone found a way to laugh it off. It just shows how great the group is!
