2015 Co-educators
2015 UConn Co-educators Begin Their Cape Town Adventures

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Education Abroad in Cape Town will tell you, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisite scenery. Therefore this blog is only intended to provide an unfolding story of the those co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany another group of students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Bernie is so thankful to be here

Cape Town is nothing like I ever expected it to be. You see pictures of this place but once you are actually here, the pictures do it no justice. It is such a beautiful city from the landscapes and nature to the people and the way of life. It is only the second day we have been here and I couldn’t be more excited to stay for the next 3 and ½ months. The plane ride was 17 hours long but it was completely worth it when we finally made it to Cape Town and were warmly welcomed by Marita, Vernon, Ben, and Jessica. After the airport we made our way to our home and it could not be more perfect. It has a huge game room where we all can be together and a wonderful pool that will definitely be useful when it’s a hot day. We all picked our rooms and unpacked our clothes then enjoyed dinner together and had a relaxing night, which was good considering how long the plane was!

Today was the first full day we have been here and we explored Rondebosch. Rondebosch is the college city for the University of Cape Town and it is beautiful. It has everything that we will need and it is only a 20-minute walk away. Near our house there is a place called Rondebosch commons and it is a huge piece of grassland that cannot be built upon aka no buildings and it is a very beautiful area that people walk and run around. After we explored Rondebosch we all came back to our house and hung out by the pool and of course I got some sunburn but that’s okay because of how beautiful the weather is. Later we are going to dinner at a Thai restaurant so that will be a lot of fun!

In general, Cape Town was so much prettier and better than I expected it to be and I expected a lot! It’s only been day 1 of our trip so I am very excited for all the days to come and the rest of orientation. This trip will be one that I will never forget and am so thankful that I am here.
